NeverSmokeAgain
|
This step is really going to surprise you. Only
those people that can make the Never Smoke Again commitment know about this
technique. IT'S A BIG SECRET. So please don't tell anyone. If you know someone
who wants to quit don't tell him or her about this part. They'll need to go through
the same step-by-step process that you went through. Don't deprive anyone of
following through the process as it is intended to take place. Please keep this
part of the program a secret. Thanks. Society puts pressure on you to be weak and to not take your commitment too seriously. Isn't it a sign of weakness to acknowledge to others around you that you have fears over returning to smoking? Isn't it a sign of weakness to show others that you need to use extraordinary measures to 'Stay-quit'? Becoming and continuing to be a non-smoker is a very private and personal matter and it is not easy, especially in the first few weeks after you quit smoking. Can you depend on those around you to fully understand and support you in ending your cigarette smoking habit? Perhaps you can or perhaps you can't. But, don't allow the influence of others to thwart your efforts to Never Smoke Again. Don't make your success depend on the support of others. That's much too risky. You have to overcome your urge to smoke cigarettes on your own! Take control of your future! So here it is: The next time you get the urge to smoke a cigarette you must recite the following willpower mantra to yourself over and over again until your urge to smoke goes away. This may sound SILLY at first but the NSA willpower mantra is like a life vest in a storm. When you get the urge to smoke begin reciting this mantra or something similar over and over again until the urge to smoke leaves you. "I will Never Smoke Again. Never, never, never. I will never smoke again. I will never, ever, ever, ever smoke again for the rest of my life. NEVER. I will never smoke again. I will never have another cigarette for the rest of my life. I will never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever smoke again. Never. I will never smoke again. Never, never, never, never, never again. I will never smoke again. I will never smoke another cigarette for as long as I live. NEVER. I will never smoke again. NEVER." Keep repeating these words over and over again
until the urge to smoke leaves you. Win the battle in your mind and your body.
TAKE CONTROL. Will the cigarette companies control your life? Or, will you
become the master of yourself? Every time you feel like having a cigarette start
reciting the willpower mantra. Expect to have to say the willpower mantra repeatedly, especially in the first few
weeks that you quit. This is normal. How long should you keep saying it? Keep
saying it for as long
as it takes - as little as two minutes or as long as thirty minutes, whatever
works for you. Hopefully, you will need to do it less and less as time goes by. Does this sound strange to you? Do you think that this is weird? I guarantee that you won't think it is weird when you get a major craving for a cigarette. GET PAST any reluctance to do this. This is no time to be shy or proud. The willpower mantra will save your life. Just do it. You can say it out loud. You can shout it to a crowd. You can say it to yourself. You can say it under your breath. NEVER." Do whatever feels most comfortable to you. If you are reluctant to say it out loud when you are with others that are not actively supporting you in your non-smoking challenge, you might want to say it quietly to yourself. The important thing is that whenever you get the urge to smoke, no matter how strong or weak the urge is, the willpower mantra will help you in your time of need. You won't need to call anyone (they might not be home), you won't need to chew gum or have to take a pill or stick a patch on your arm. All you need to do is repeat the willpower mantra over and over again. It works! NEVER." Will a time come when you won't need to recite these words? Of course, but that may take a very long time. Some NSA graduates tell us that they occasionally use it one or two years after quitting smoking. Most important is that the frequency of having to use the willpower mantra will decrease as time goes on. After a few weeks you may find that you only need to say it once per week. After a few months you will probably only have to use it on very rare occasions. Some former smokers (that's you) can get the urge to smoke after a few years. There's no telling how long you may have to recite the willpower mantra. There are no rules. The technique is there for you whenever and WHEREVER you need it. This technique is also successful because not only does it help to re-focus your mind at a moment of weakness, it also helps you to reaffirm your commitment to Never Smoke Again for the rest of your life each time you say it. |
